The things Millikin University never told you...

Ahhh... There you are Millikin.

Millikin University is home to the "Big Blue" .... whatever the hell that is. It is also home to a giant mess of a university. Below, you will find many reasons to avoid Millikin as your home-away-from-home for four years.

1) Millikin promotes diversity. Does it really? They state that they offer such. However, by their definition of diversity, every individual on campus is his or her own distinctive class. This constitution of diversity is not grossly visible. At a glance, Millikin is a white-rich (maybe 70%) institution with approximately three-quarter being a fine-arts major. There's a reason why their demographic is not published on its website.

They also promote fostering a campus atmosphere where diversity is valued. However, it has been shown through numerous of protests that the school is liberal. It tries to abstain itself from controversial topics instead of tackling the situation heads-on. For example, the nation probably remembered the National Anthem situation where it asked its football players to stay inside the locker room. In this case, one football player refused and went out to stand in support of our great nation. This left the nation, especially alumni, infuriated with the un-patriotic university. After a engrossing amount of individuals posting onto the Millikin Facebook page, it removed its entire public forum section. Millikin never addressed the issue again. On the other hand, Millikin has been seen to accommodate and support liberal protests, whereas conservative ones were ignored.

2) Millikin promotes an affordable education. Does it really? Millikin's tuition has been rising for the past 3 years, and I don't see it stagnating anytime soon. While Millikin might maintain that it has no money and so raising tuition is the best solution, it just previously built the University Common. It's an unnecessary construction of bricks that has left many students stranded on the east side of campus to trek through the icy, cold snow of winter or slippery, damp rains of spring in order to get to class. In addition to that, their decision to sign a contract with the Woods, which is gated community of apartments, have costed students a load more of money. Apartments go for $830-ish a person per month. This cost does not include utilities or food.

3) Millikin promotes safety. Does it really? Millikin's public safety has a track record for being slow-responding. If you are stranded in your car in the Rape Lot (M1 Lot), which freshmen park at, or stormed-in at Scovil, then don't expect public safety to arrive for maybe 30 minutes or so. Their slow-response is limited to the amount of security guards available at night. At which, they will take their sweet time to arrive.

4) Millikin is in a town full of stuff to do. Is it really? Decatur, Illinois is beyond far from fun, unless you consider playing puzzles indoor or trips to Walmart as fun activities. Millikin has been seen to limit fun on campus, as it is very strict in regards to alcohol consumption. If you want to see what college life is about, go to the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign (UIUC) or Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC). These universities offer more excursions than Millikin ever will.

Are you looking to join Greek Life? That might not be the best bet here at Millikin. Administrators will tell you to join such or that they promote it. The reality is that students in Greek life tend to maintain the University's retention rate. Without such benefit, administrators will do no such to promote such a mischievous group of individuals. Don't let Millikin trick you to believe that you are special. You are, honestly, just another number paying their bills. Or in other words: You are an object.

5) Millikin has a great list of missions and values. Does it really? Let's keep this one clear and simple. Not 1% of the student population can tell you the mission and visions of the university without having to look at its webpage and decipher the code for 5 minutes.

Here is the link for all of you who actually cares: http://millikin.edu/about/mission-values .

6) Millikin cares about your education. Does it really? Millikin states that students live on-campus for 3 years to promote education or something of the sort. However, Millikin fails to provide any sort of data to support such a claim. Why do you suppose they not do that? Because there's no statistical significance between the GPA or achievements of those that live off-campus from those that live on-campus. It has been believed by students that Millikin made this pretext to cover-up their contract with the Woods. If they do not meet a specified quota, they have to pay the Woods the difference, which is a logical inference.

Nonetheless, there is one big reason why Millikin might be good school for you: the faculty. The faculty cares about their students, well most of them at least. The curriculum is somewhat rigorous, the faculty are always available for their students, and the class sizes are small.

This might be a long rant about a small university, but each is very real about the school. When picking a school, look at everything. Don't depend on the university's information. Ask current students, and not just the student leaders either.
